Studie: Selbstwirksamkeits-Erwartung bei Bulimia nervosa (2003)
Several studies have shown relationships between self-efficacy expectations (general – GSE - and specific - SSE) and changes in specific behaviors in the areas of clinical and health psychology. The present thesis examines these relationships with regard to bulimic behavior.
It specifically examines to what extent these parameters can be influenced by in-patient treatment in a specialized clinic for integrated psychosomatic and holistic medicine (Germany). A sample of 25 female patients with bulimia completed the GKE (Generalized competence expectations questionnaire) by Schwarzer (1994) and the SFB (Self-efficacy questionnaire for bulimia) by Wilson (1994) both at the beginning and end of their stay in the above clinic. Number of Bingeing-Purging-Episodes (B-P-E) was also assessed.
The three main results can be summarized as follows: The study demonstrates that over the course of therapy, (1) both kinds of self-efficacy expectations and the frequency of B-P-E changed significantly in a healthier direction; (2) a trend relationship between SSE and B-P-E became significant; and a trend indicating a relationship between GSE and E-P-E emerged. (3) As well, the relationship between GSE and SSE, although absent before, was highly significant after completion of the therapy. The question of causal relationships between GSE, SSE, and (bulimia-)specific behaviors and the implications for therapy research and practice are discussed.
